Midcentury Rosewood Cabinet by Harvey Probber

This very  rare 1960's era cabinet by designer Harvey Probber arrived in very sad condition. cabinet was gouged and scraped up. I restored it without sanding through the lovely golden patina. (old rosewood can go very dark if you sand into the unfaded wood) The black frame is ebonised honduras mahogany, which I patched with identical wood, matching the grain and grain density, and re-ebonised. The deep gouge in the rosewood top was carefully filled with matching filler, including the stripes in the special translucent filler material to match the rosewood grain. Door hinges were reworked to pivot properly.  Brass feet were reworked to remove extreme damage. Interior door jamb was repaired where door had taken a 6" chunk out of it. Entire cabinet exterior was relacquered with original type of nitrocellulose lacquer. Interior was repolished and touched up leaving original finish intact.

Original lacquer finish was crazed and milky.

1/8" deep gouge in top entirely through the veneer

Hinges were worn and loose so that veneer became damaged and doors did not swing right

Cabinet had been dragged on the pavement.
